What Is S-Glass Fiberglass?
S-glass fiberglass is a high strength, stiff alternative to standard E-glass fiberglass. Even though they look and feel similar, S-glass is more expensive. It is an excellent choice for laminates that need higher strength and stiffness.
S-Glass Fiberglass
Overview S-glass is a high strength glass fabric consisting of 40% tensile strength and 20% higher modulus. It has excellent abrasion resistance when used as a composite reinforcement material. It is compatible with resin, vinylester, epoxy resins. S-glass is often used for polymer matrix composites that require enhanced mechanical properties.
S-Glass vs. E-Glass
E-Glass was initially developed for electrical wire insulation. Later, it was found to possess greater reinforcement strength upon coupling with a plastic resin. It is lightweight and cost-efficient.
S-glass fibers, on the other hand, was developed for ballistic and military applications because of its high strength and stiffness. The material is relatively low density, resistant to heat, moisture, and chemicals, non-flammable, and has a higher production rate. S-glass makes an ideal material for ballistic and military applications.
