What Is S-Glass Fiberglass?
The S-glass fiberglass is a high performing, stiff, and more robust alternative to the standard E-glass fiberglass. Both choices look and feel just the same. However, S-glass is a little more expensive, but its advantages surpass the cost. It is an excellent choice for laminates that need higher strength. And here are more details about this material:
S-Glass Fiberglass Overview
S-glass is a high strength glass fabric consisting of 40% tensile strength and 20% higher modulus. It has excellent abrasion resistance when used as a composite reinforcement material. It is compatible with resin, vinylester, epoxy resins, and the aerospace finish allows the material to have a longer working life. S-glass is more often used for polymer matrix composites that require enhanced mechanical properties.
S-Glass vs. E-Glass
Let’s quickly look at what is the E-Glass and S-glass difference:
E-Glass was initially developed for electrical wire insulation. Later, it was found to possess greater reinforcement strength upon coupling with a plastic resin. Itis lightweight, cost-efficient, but lacks in certain areas where S-Glass fiberglass cloth doesn’t.
S-glass fibers, on the other side, bridge the downsides of E-Glass. It was developed for ballistic and military applications, for it is high strength and stiff. The material is relatively low density, resistant to heat, moisture, and chemicals, non-flammable, and has a higher production rate. S-glass makes an ideal material for the outer layers of a composite boat. It is rigid enough to carve a stiff hull. And it is also resistant to breaking or scratches.
If you compare S-Glass and E-Glass materials, you will find the former one to be much superior in terms of the tensile strength and modulus. But all of this comes at a slightly higher price.
S-Glass Manufacturing
Usually, glass fibers are produced with melt spinning techniques. Fiber dimensions, as well as some properties, can be controlled with the process variables. Sizing and coupling agents treat the fibers that are produced, reducing the fiber-to-fiber abrasion. This also does not degrade their mechanical strengths.
