What is MICA Tape?
MICA tape is a flexible, non-toxic mica product reinforced fiberglass fabric ensuring strong cohesion and adhesion of mica to its glass fabric. It’s widely used across several industrial applications such as HV power generators and cable wraps.
About MICA Tape
The MICA tape is an inorganic, high dielectric tape manufactured with mica paper and glued with small amounts of resin to the glass fiber substrate. Epoxy or silicone resins are commonly used to produce a powerful bond between the paper and the substrate.
Based on the applications, the backing may be polyester films, non-woven polyester web, or woven/ non-woven glass cloths. It’s mica and fiberglass backing that makes the tape non-combustible.
The thickness of MICA tape for electrical insulation plays an important role and can be tailored according to the customer’s needs.
MICA Tape Advantages
The significant benefits of using MICA tape are all summed up in the following points:
Anti-shock
Non-flammable
Low electric loss
High thermal resistance
Contains no asbestos
Eliminates corona discharge
Exceptional tensile strength
High surface and volume resistivity
Superb resistance to acids, bases, oils, and solvents
Doesn’t produce toxic gases
Great dielectric strength
Easy impregnation with resin
Excellent resistance to electrical breakdown
MICA Tape Applications
The fiberglass backed phlogopite MICA paper tape is mostly used in the following applications:
Electrical insulation of cables and coils
Computer centers
Industry plants
Telecomm centers
Power stations
Multi-storey building/ subways
Aerospace/ military units
